From childhood, JENNIFER FAIDA never had any happy experience. Because of having an unsupportive father, her mother’s death and her own sickness, she thought life was unfair to her and her siblings. Below, shares her experience with Pauline Akello.

Miserable childhood
Given the fact that her father had three wives, and her mother being the first, it was not easy for him to support all because he was financially struggling.

Faida’s mother did all kinds of odd jobs to sustain the household.

Still, there was never enough resources to support the family; so, Faida decided to find casual work in different homes for a daily earning.

She did this every evening after school, and fortunately made it to primary seven.

“I thank God I was able to make it to this key class, and I am proud of what God enabled me to do,” she joyfully says.

Prior to completing Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), her mother’s friend asked to take up the responsibility of sponsoring her education.

However, what was given as a promise turned out to be a saddening lie.

“When I arrived at her home, I was immediately given heavy house chores to do. I had to fetch over 100 litres of water daily, make local brew, on top of miserable meals,” Faida says.

This was unfair, given that she was just 13 years old. Sadly, whenever her ‘guardian’ returned to Arua, she blatantly lied to her mother that Faida was attending and doing well in school.

When she could not take it anymore, she requested to go back home.

She was sent off without any proper guidance on how to get back to Arua.

Meanwhile, the LRA rebels were blocking roads and killing people.

Faida says they were detained in the bus park for a week and the national army sent soldiers to protect and monitor the situation.

Eventually, she was able to return home.

Redeeming the time
Faida says by the grace of God she was able to return to school and resume from primary four.

All this time, her mother encouraged her to do house chores for different households, in order to earn some money.

During one of her occasional job searches, she came across Rev Rose Obema at Emmanuel Cathedral Church, Arua.

That was an encounter Faida says changed her life.

“I had a conversation with her and I was led to Christ. I got born again and started building my faith. She also offered me a job,” Faida says.

Life toughens
Right at the cusp of completing primary school, Faida’s mother fell terribly sick for a long time.

She was then required to leave school and took on the responsibility of nursing her ailing mother.

Sadly, she passed on and Faida lost hope of returning to school.

She had to fend for her siblings. While vending dry fish, one day she met her mother’s friend who offered to clear their family debts.

She also gave her money, which she used to pay for PLE fees.

Unfortunately after primary seven, she could not further her education.

Also, because she could not find better opportunities in Arua, she travelled to Kampala, leaving her siblings with relatives.

She always prayed to God to help her find a good home. Fortunately, she met a reverend (she prefers to keep anonymous) who offered her a job as a cook in Church. To date, she still holds the position.

During this time, she got into a relationship with a man, with whom they had children.

But unfortunately they separated, and she had to send her children to her in-laws.

“It was a trying time, and during that period I also fell so ill of a disease I have to date failed to comprehend.

“I was bedridden for a full year and the doctors never found the illness. I only trusted God to heal me,” she says.

Recovery
By the grace of God, Faida says: “God had to fulfill His plan for my life I recovered fully and I’m back to my job.
“God has preserved me and my children every day. I am the embodiment of His mercies.”

She says Jeremiah 29:11 stands true her my life; “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Faida hopes her testimony will highlight the power and faithfulness of God. She says: “this story is to show people that God cares.”
