Continuing in the book of Matthew 2, we find the story of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus.

The chapter is filled with multiple incidents in which God guided His people, giving them wisdom and protecting them so as to fulfil His plan concerning the birth of His Son, Jesus.

Psalm 37:23 teaches us that, “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way”.

God protects Jesus
The wise men, also called Magi, had innocently visited King Herod. They thought that they could ask him about the location of Jesus, the new born king.

The Magi had come to honour the new born king but were not aware that not everyone shared their admiration and excitement for Him.

Herod told them, “when you find Him, come back and tell me so I can go and worship Him too”. Scripture says, they went their way.

But after they had visited the baby Jesus, and it was time to leave, God warned them in a dream not to return to Herod and they returned to their home country by another route.

After the wise men left, God revealed to Joseph in a dream the real danger that was coming against Jesus and gave him direction that would protect his family.

Joseph obeyed and took the child and His mother during the night and left for Egypt.

Lessons
God is able and always willing to give us wisdom. Just like in this story, He uses many ways to direct our way; through His word and the Holy Spirit.

James 1:5 teaches us that, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”.

When God gives us His wisdom, we must listen, and be willing to obey.

Because of the wisdom and guidance that God gave to the wise men and to Joseph, through their obedience, they were able to avoid danger, outwit Herod and protect the saviour of the world.

The Bible says, that when Herod found out that the wise men had been discerning of his evil plans, he sent soldiers to kill all the boys in Bethlehem who were two years and below.

By this, he hoped to kill Jesus but God had already protected Him.

Later on, when King Herod had died, God again gave Joseph wisdom in dream to return from Egypt to Israel.
We serve an all-knowing God. He sees and knows all things, and protects His people from danger.

When Joseph returned to Israel, he heard that now it was Herod’s son Archelaus in power and was afraid.

The Lord guided him to go to stay in Galilea with his family in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled God’s word through the prophets.

God cares about every detail of our lives. He has planned our lives from beginning to the end and we need trust and ask Him for wisdom to know what is right.
