Edith Nakiguli grew up in a fraught environment, because her family was financially unstable. Her parents were both unemployed and the future seemed blurry to her and her siblings, until her aunt and a stranger stepped in. She told her testimony to Lilian Ntege.

Childhood
Nakiguli is the fourth born of her father’s five children. She grew up with her family at Kasubi- Lubya, a Kampala suburb.

She says she had a gruesome childhood because of the financial struggles her family faced.

“My father and mother were not working and at times could not afford to put food on the table,” she says.

She adds that her mother used to move around the neighbourhood doing laundry and other domestic chores in order to get money to buy food and other basic needs.

Nakiguli says life was extremely hard, and at times her and her young brother would also go house to house doing minor chores, trying to find food.

Regardless of the dreadful life they were experiencing, Nakiguli’s mother was prayerful and always taught them about the power of God and prayer.

She ensured to instil spiritual growth amongst her children at a tender age. However, burdening life was, they always found time to fellowship and give thanks to God.

Worse situation
Nakiguli says life became harder when her mother got seriously sick and was taken to the village to get treatment and also lessen the burden in their urban household.

Unfortunately, her mother has not fully healed and often requires medical assistance to date.

Still, life was worsening and they resorted to begging and eating street leftovers.

“We started going to dustbins to look for something to eat. We also had to do odd jobs in people’s homes, just to get something to eat. We even stopped going to school because we could not manage the school fees and bills,” she says.

She emphasises that amidst all this strife, they never forgot prayer and seeking God’s help.

God’s intervention
Nakiguli says with the help of Pr Victor Kasuja of Kampala Life Centre Church Lubya, Kigoobe, her life changed.

She learned from him that consisted prayer changes situations; so, she prayed more than ever.

When she was nine years old, life started changing when her aunt took her and her young brother in to stay with her.

Her aunt provided for all their basic needs, and Nakiguli smiles as she says: “We even started taking good meals.”

Better still, she adds that she also got lucky when her elder sister was connected by her friends to St Nicholas Children Funds, an organisation that offers scholarships to disadvantaged children.

They applied for sponsorship and fortunately were considered.

From then to date, her school fees and other basic needs have been catered for by this organisation which is committed to helping her till she completes university.

She is thankful to God and believes with her education, she will be successful in the future.

She also greatly appreciates her sponsors who ensure that she never lacks any needs.

She says: “I have never struggled again with anything regarding my education ever since I was accepted by my sponsors, and I can never stop thanking God for that.”

Nakiguli is now in senior four at Exodus College School, Banda, Wakiso district.

She says she wants to be an accountant in future and work hard to pay school fees for her young brother.

She adds that she also wants to be able to take her mother, who has been ill for a long time, for better treatment.

She knows all this will come true because God will make it possible.

Esther Nababiro, Nakiguli’s elder sister, wonders where they would be if they had not got the scholarship.

“I am not sure how life would be if my siblings had not got this chance. I am thankful to God that this opportunity gave them a platform to make life better. I wish Edith the best and pray she keeps in school till she completes university,” Nababiro says.

Advice
Nakiguli encourages anyone going through the same situation, that suffering is not be the end if the world.
Tomorrow may change when you keep your hopes on God’s provision and power.

She also encourages young people to believe in prayer because God answers and He never disappoints.
She also advises students to study hard and keep in school.
