Jesus’ fi rst miracle was transforming water (H2O) into something much sweeter. He introduced a carbon atom, which completely made a different substance – wine H2O+CO2=2C2H5OH (not balanced chemical formula).
Wine or alcohol is made through fermentation – a biological process which converts sugars such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose into cellular energy, producing ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide as by-products.
Fermentation is: C6H12O6 (sugars) → 2 C2H5OH (alcohol) +CO2 (carbon dioxide). Jesus never used any sugars to mix into those six water pots. He did not even ferment the water. Fermentation always takes time and needs additions of sugars, catalysts, etc. This was a miracle. He spoke the word or commanded water to become wine instantly.
This is what makes Jesus God. In John 1:3: “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” I was extremely impressed when I started learning chemistry at Lubiri Secondary School in 1966.
I got so much interested and wanted to become a chemical engineer even before I did my Advanced Level exams. I had just got saved. Jesus’ fi rst miracle, without using any reagents, impressed me so much and I believed.
Nonetheless, I changed my mind to become a medical doctor – like Jesus who is the greatest physician. He healed people without surgery or medicines – something nobody before or after has done except His followers (Mark 16:15-18).
Challenge When they brought this new wine at the wedding party at Cana, the master of ceremony said: “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk then that which is worse; but thou has kept the good wine until now.” Jesus’ wine was sweeter than manmade!
As you read this, you need to become a true follower of Christ. He will change your life instantly and introduce the Holy Spirit into you. This Holy Spirit, like the carbon atom Jesus introduced miraculously to make wine, will transform your life, enrich you in all sorts of ways and you will become an instrument of God on Earth.
