Adam and Eve in Garden

By Dr Edward Tamale-Sali

Genesis 2:18-23 says: “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper compartible to him.”

Out of the ground, the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them.

Whatever Adam called each of the creatures became its name. He named all animals, birds of the air, and every beast of the field. God realized Adam did not have a helper comparable to him.

He then caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.

Then God used the rib He took from man to make a woman and He brought her to the man.

Upon seeing the woman, Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’ because she was taken out of man.”

For the last three years, we have seen and continue to see how God the Creator keeps constant care and provides for man without fail.

God understands
God created man on the sixth day (Genesis 1:27 2:7). He christened him ‘Adam’ and gave him authority to control everything He had made (Genesis 1:27-29).

However, after some time (we do not know how long), God realised that Adam was lonely (Genesis 2:18), and He gave him Eve.

This is interesting because we learn that God understands our problems and tells us not to worry (Matthew 6:25-34).
Jesus Himself re-emphasized this in the New Testament.

God gave Adam a helper
“It is not good that Adam should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18).

This was God’s idea of getting Adam to be married. Now we know that marriage was constituted by God.
It was not man’s idea. All children of God need to know this.

The creation of woman
God probably had many options for creating a woman:

1- He could have spoken a word and instantly this ‘wife’ being would appear just like other creatures. He would then present her to Adam.

2-He would have created another man to take away Adam’s boredom and loneliness

3-He would have made some animals speak, thereby giving company to Adam.

But He did not do all these. He made a woman out of Adam’s rib. He took Adam to His “hospital theatres”, caused general anaesthesia (this is the first ‘surgical operation’ under anaesthesia ever recorded), took a rib out of him, and created Eve.

She was a suitable and compatible human being for Adam.

You remember God had said, “I will look for a suitable helper” for Adam. To me, this is amazing and miraculous.
As a scientist, I see that God wanted Adam’s and Eve’s DNA to be shared or from the same source.

Marriage, therefore, is a mystery that God Himself instituted.

It should be between a man and a woman. Women were created as helpers to men and to take away loneliness.

Being alone can be dangerous at times. We often need people to help us on this journey of life.

Personal Testimony
My daughter, Rebecca Sali, got married on October 29, 2022 to a very handsome young man called Daniel Kabali Sengaga.

It was a joyous occasion and we are very grateful to God who fulfilled His promises to the couple.

God pre-arranged this relationship as He promised in the Bible that He would “make a helper suitable” for man.

I would compare my daughter who is now her husband’s companion to Eve.

Lesson
If you keep faithful to God, He will find a suitable helper for you because He is aware of your needs.

Do not try to do it yourself or by your own power. God will do it for you as He did it for Adam.

Remember it was His idea from the beginning. So, He will give you a companion who is suitable for you. Trust in Him.

Shalom.
