The Church of Uganda House of Bishops has ordered for fresh nominations from the diocesan nominations committee for a period of one month, ending on July 31, 2023.
In a statement dated June 30, 2023, the Provincial Secretary, Can William Ongeng, said the House of Bishops will receive fresh nominations for the next bishop of Luweero diocese.
They will conduct elections on August 1, 2023, and thereafter, consecration and enthronement will take place on August 6, at St Mark’s Cathedral, Luweero.
The current Bishop of Luweero, Rt Rev Elidad Nsubuga will abdicate the seat on July 9, 2023, upon reaching the mandatory age of retirement.
He will hand over ecclesiastical authority to the Archbishop, per the constitution and Canons of the Church of Uganda.
Can Ongeng urged Christians and church leaders to remain calm and pray for Luweero diocese as the search goes on.
It should be noted that on April 2, Rev Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula was elected as the next bishop, and was set to be consecrated on July 16.
However, shortly after the election, a petition was filed, seeking to nullify his election on grounds of incompetence and lack of integrity.
